The Valley is a six-storey retirement complex of 108 flats in Berea, East London, run by the Berea Gardens Retirement Foundation, a non-profit company founded in 1974. All flats are sold by Life Right under the Foundation's Endowment Scheme, so a resident buys the right to live in a unit rather than the property itself. There are 10 different types of flat, all north-facing with patios, and fifteen ground-level flats open onto their own gardens. The complex has two lifts, four coin-operated launderettes, a guest room, a Blue Lounge, an activity room and a roof garden with braai areas. Reception is staffed around the clock by security officers, and every flat has a two-way intercom and distress bell. According to the home's website, a dedicated manager looks after residents, a nursing sister is on call during normal working hours, and a nursing clinic is held in the residence three times a week.
