Camphill Village

According to the home's website, Camphill Village West Coast is a community of about 100 adults with intellectual disabilities who live in 13 homes on a farm at Klein Dassenberg, about 40km north of Cape Town. It was founded in 1964 and is governed by Camphill Village NPC. Residents live alongside home leaders and volunteers, sharing homes, meals and everyday life, and each resident has a private room with shared bathrooms. Residents are supported to develop skills and work across the village enterprises, which include a bakery, a dairy, a natural cosmetics workshop and the farm and vegetable garden. Support includes speech and movement therapy, equine therapy, and art and music therapy. The village is best suited to adults with mild intellectual disabilities, aged over 18 and under 45 at application, who can manage personal care independently and are physically mobile across farm distances. People who need ongoing nursing or specialised medical care, wheelchair access, or primary psychiatric or severe behavioural support may be unsuitable. Applicants have a three-month trial placement. The village aims to provide lifelong care where long-term financial provision is secured and the resident's medical, mental health and behavioural needs remain within its capacity to support.
