Droom is a non-governmental organisation in Riversdale in the South Western Cape. Its name is an Afrikaans acronym for Diens aan Riversdal en Omgewing, meaning Service to Riversdale and Community. It consists of two old age homes, Ou Meule and Jan Lange, as well as life right units and rental units. According to Droom's website, Ou Meule is its frail care unit and can accommodate 73 frail residents, of whom 25 beds are reserved for the Alzheimer Dementia Centre. Jan Lange opened in August 1963 and can accommodate 44 residents; it was first reserved for mid-care or assisted living residents, and a section of 7 rooms on the ground floor was converted into what the website calls a step down or second frail care unit. There are 25 life right units, for which the resident pays an initial financial contribution and then a monthly levy, and 7 rental units. There is a waiting list for the life right units, and an assessment is required before admission to a life right or rental unit. Both homes are within walking distance of the shops, doctors, Post Office and Library.
Typical costs for old age homes in South Africa
We do not have Droom’s own fees. As a general guide:
Private old age homes charge R6,000–R20,000/month. NGO and church-run homes are often subsidised and accept SASSA pension (currently R2,400/month). Government-subsidised beds are limited and often have waiting lists.
These are typical South African ranges for this type of care, not this home’s prices. Actual fees vary by room type, level of care, and area, and they change every year - always confirm current rates with the home.
