Glenhaven Care (CEBACWAS)

Glenhaven Retirement Centre was planned and founded by the Central Baptist Church Welfare Association (CEBACWAS), which the Central Baptist Church of Pretoria established in November 1980, and it officially opened on 27 April 1985. It lies on the border of Faerie Glen and Garsfontein in Pretoria East, on 3.3 hectares with 95 cottages and 59 flats, and CEBACWAS is a non-profit organisation. The site describes Glenhaven as one of the first retirement centres in South Africa to combine independent living, assisted living and frail care within one estate; an Alzheimer's and dementia unit was added later, with the stated intent of keeping couples as close as possible to one another as their levels of care change. One, two and three-bedroom cottages are sold on a life-right basis, which the site defines as the right to live in a unit for the rest of your or your spouse's life, or until you sell it. Bachelor and one-bedroom flats are rented directly from CEBACWAS, and cottages also come up for rent from time to time through life-right owners. The site says a rental includes everything except electricity and meals, and that the levy paid by a life-right owner covers the upkeep of common areas, rates and taxes, security and water, but not electricity or meals. If an owner sells, or dies, the unit reverts to CEBACWAS to sell, and on death the life-right pay-out is made to the estate; the site does not say what share of the sale price is paid out. The Frail Care Unit, founded in 1985 and expanded in 2005, gives 24-hour care to up to 60 residents needing physical, mental or respite care, in rooms from shared doubles to singles; some rooms have a bathroom and others do not. It has no set visiting hours: visitors are welcome at any time, and the home asks that visits are at reasonable hours. On admission all medication is handed to the Sister on duty; it is blister-packed by a pharmacy and handed out by staff, and residents and their families may not administer their own. The Grace Unit, opened in October 2015, cares for up to 14 people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, with a security door at each entrance, a private garden of its own and a stimulation programme. Assisted living services for retirement-centre residents are charged over and above the levy according to the services needed, as assessed by a Dependency Questionnaire (DQ). Four sick bay beds in the Frail Care Unit are reserved for short-term convalescence and nursing care, shared between Glenhaven's residents and those of Haven Village, the second retirement centre CEBACWAS manages; Glenhaven residents also have preferential access to the Frail Care Unit if they need longer-term care. At night a retirement-centre resident presses a panic button and the 24-hour frail care service responds. In the retirement centre every unit carries 8 compulsory meals; other meals are booked a day ahead, with lunch served in the dining hall and dinner as a take-away. Pets are not allowed; only animals related to a medical condition, such as guide dogs, will be considered.
