Disability Residentialafrikaans community

Huis Horison (Horizon House) is a residential and sheltered-employment centre in Stellenbosch for people with a primary intellectual disability. It was established in 1974 and is on a smallholding on the slopes of Papegaaiberg Mountain on the outskirts of the town. Accommodation ranges from flats to single rooms, most of the single rooms with a small en-suite bathroom, and provision is made for married couples. Parents or family members secure an agreement for the right of occupation on a residential unit. Three meals a day are eaten in the communal dining room and special dietary needs are catered for. Residents join work areas based on their abilities and interests, such as sewing, recycling, repair work, cooking and gardening. Support comes from staff, instructors, medical staff and a social worker, with an occupational therapist guiding personal care and daily activities. It is a non-profit company responsible for its own funding.

Typical costs for disability residential facilities in South Africa

We do not have Huis Horison’s own fees. As a general guide:

Costs range from SASSA disability grant-funded beds (the disability grant is R2,400/month in 2026) in subsidised NGO facilities to roughly R8,000–R15,000/month in private facilities. In a state-contracted facility the grant is reduced to 25% (about R600/month) from the fourth month, with the subsidy covering the rest. Government-funded beds have long waiting lists.

These are typical South African ranges for this type of care, not this home’s prices. Actual fees vary by room type, level of care, and area, and they change every year - always confirm current rates with the home.
