Huis Protea is run by the Germiston Association for the Aged (GAFA) at the corner of Churchill Avenue and Tulip Road in Primrose, Germiston, and is promoted on its website as Protea Retirement Village. The association began with the Protea Care Centre, opened on 19 November 1955, and later added the Rotary and Golden Years units and the Ihlati villas. According to the home's website, its frail care centre also caters for older persons with Alzheimer's and dementia, GAFA has two Assisted Living houses, and 24-hour nursing care is offered to all GAFA residents. Village units range from bachelor to three bedrooms. Residents hold life rights to their unit, and on resale 80% of the original sales price is paid back. Residents pay a monthly levy that covers nursing support and a care giver, garden service and exterior maintenance, and cleaning of the unit is compulsory. Services include 24-hour security, a laundry service, a library, an on-site hairdresser, take-away lunches and an on-call medical practitioner and physiotherapist. Cats and dogs are not allowed, and the village is a non-smoking zone.
