Oatlands Care Centre is a small in-patient mental health facility in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, next to Lenmed Private Hospital Howick, providing voluntary admission for adults who need stabilisation, therapeutic support and time to recover in a safe, contained environment. It has 20 beds, in shared two-bedded rooms with en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning (private rooms can be arranged where available, though the fee is not covered by medical aid), and treats mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety and stress-related conditions, and personality-related challenges. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary clinical team of psychiatrists, psychologists and occupational therapists, with nursing staff on duty at a 24-hour nursing station, through a structured daily programme of individual therapy, group therapy, stress management, psycho-education, emotional regulation and occupational and resilience-based work. Oatlands is registered with the Department of Health and the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF), is a member of the National Hospital Network (NHN), and most medical aid schemes are able to authorise treatment there; it is not a detox or addiction rehabilitation facility and does not admit patients who are actively psychotic, experiencing substance withdrawal, or whose primary issue is addiction. It is a general adult mental health unit, not a dementia, frail care or old age home.
