According to the village's website, Ridgewood Village is a lifestyle village for people over 50 in Mt Edgecombe, about 12 km north of Durban. It is a sectional title development with 81 cottages from one to three bedrooms and an apartment block with 13 one-bedroom apartments and 14 bedsitters. Units are available for sale or to rent. The grounds have a clubhouse, hairdressing salon, swimming pool, dining room, card room, braai area and library. An on-site kitchen provides meals at a nominal cost on a four-week set menu, and meals can be delivered to residents who cannot leave their homes. The village has a manager living on site, a manned main gate 24 hours a day, a night patrol and a panic button for every resident. The village grounds also hold Ridgewood Care Centre, a separate care facility that is privately owned and managed. According to the Care Centre's entry on the village website, it offers three levels of care: independent living, assisted living and skilled health care for residents who need 24-hour attention.
