Trevelyn Lodge

10-hectare farm near Vredenburg, Vredenburg, Western Cape

Disability Residential

Trevelyn Lodge is a privately owned home for adults with intellectual disability, on a 10-hectare farm 8 kilometres from Vredenburg. According to the home's website, it has a maximum of 57 residents in three residences: a cottage for the more capable residents, a main building for the general population and a care centre for those less capable, which was designed for severely disabled residents and for wheelchairs. Residents' disabilities range from autism, Down syndrome, bipolar disorder, brain injury and epilepsy to intellectual disability. There is a maximum of two residents per bedroom, and one caregiver supervises a maximum of three residents during the day and seven at night. Acceptance depends on the manageability and stability of the resident's behaviour rather than the type of disability. Days are split into work, crafts and leisure, including organic gardening, and residents go on excursions and shopping and library visits. The home is not a medical facility, and a local doctor does house calls.

Typical costs for disability residential facilities in South Africa

We do not have Trevelyn Lodge’s own fees. As a general guide:

Costs range from SASSA disability grant-funded beds (the disability grant is R2,400/month in 2026) in subsidised NGO facilities to roughly R8,000–R15,000/month in private facilities. In a state-contracted facility the grant is reduced to 25% (about R600/month) from the fourth month, with the subsidy covering the rest. Government-funded beds have long waiting lists.

These are typical South African ranges for this type of care, not this home’s prices. Actual fees vary by room type, level of care, and area, and they change every year - always confirm current rates with the home.
